Pupil Premium at New Horizons Academy

A Summary for Parents & Carers

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium (PP) is an allocated sum of money given to schools by the government to help children reach their full potential. It is for and based on the number of children who:

  • Are currently eligible for Free School Meals (or have been in the last 6 years).
  • Are "Looked After" or have previously been in local authority care.
  • Have parents serving in the armed forces (Service Pupil Premium).

Pupil Premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils, and schools do not have to spend pupil premium so that it solely benefits pupils who meet the funding criteria. It can be used:

  • To support other pupils with identified needs, such as those who have or have had a social worker, or who act as a carer
  • For whole class interventions which will also benefit non-disadvantaged pupils.

Our Pupil Premium strategy is built on the EEF (Education Endowment Foundation) and DFE supported 3-tier approach:

  1. Delivery of high quality first class teaching
  2. Targeted Academic Support
  3. Wider Strategies including the supporting of attendance and wider curricular opportunities

How do we use Pupil Premium at New Horizons Academy?

As an Alternative Provision school, we use this funding to go "above and beyond" the standard classroom experience. We know that for our children to learn, they first need to feel safe, happy, and supported.

Our Pupil Premium funding is used to support our pupils in a variety of ways such as but not limited to:

  • Emotional Wellbeing: Funding for SEMH support and interventions to help children manage their feelings and emotions.
  • Enrichment: Helping provide wider curriculum learning, special visitors, or additional off-site learning so that every child has the same exciting and enriching experiences.
  • Supporting High Quality Teaching and Essential Resources: Providing specific learning tools, staff CPD or equipment that help your child succeed in class.

Within the school’s Pupil Premium strategy, there are other included strategies listed which do not rely on the Premium funding but are used to support the progress and development of our pupils.

How can you help?

If you think your child might be eligible for Free School Meals—even if they already receive "Universal Infant Free School Meals" (Reception to Year 2)—please let us know. It helps the school receive this extra funding to support your child's journey.

  • Our Pupil Premium Lead is: Elliott Hodson-Deputy Headteacher
