Intent: Enrichment at New Horizons Academy |
At New Horizons Academy, we recognise that many of our learners have experienced barriers to traditional classroom-based education and can benefit from opportunities to learn through movement, exploration, creativity, problem-solving and real-life experiences. Giving our learners a range of varied educational and life experiences to support them to engage in education is our main goal. From visitors, trips and whole school events to our weekly range of off site learning, to our carefully planned and tracked in-house Personal Development (PD) curriculum, all of our enrichment opportunities focus on developing the whole child and provide opportunities that many of our learners may not otherwise have had access to, supporting their social, emotional, physical and cultural development. |

Implementation: Enrichment at New Horizons Academy |
There are many varied enrichment opportunities for every pupil at New Horizons Academy falling under the following categories: Civic Engagement; Arts and Culture; Nature, Outdoors and Adventure; Sport and Physical activities as well as Developing Wider Life and Future Skills. Delivery of these takes place regularly throughout the year, with many running weekly. Due to the nature of our setting and school day timings, these activities take place within the school day to allow all our pupils to be able to access our enrichment opportunities. A more detailed overview of our Outdoor Learning Curriculum can be found here. Our current enrichment offer is shown below with new opportunities being added throughout the year. |

Enrichment: Trips, Visitors, at Home and in School In addition to the above, pupils are also able to access and take part in: school event days; whole school, key stage and class trips and external visitor experiences which are planned throughout the school year. Our enrichment offer has previously and will continue to include the below enrichment opportunities, where appropriate for our pupils, as well as other new opportunities which will help to support their development and provide them with a range of different experiences (some of which will be ‘firsts’ for many of our children). Trips can be curriculum linked and due to some subjects running on an A/B cycle, a number of trips or visitor experiences will occur once every two years rather than annually. |

Impact: Enrichment at New Horizons Academy |
At New Horizons Academy, our enrichment curriculum directly addresses the historical barriers to learning experienced by our pupils by re-engaging them in education through experiential, real-world learning. By embedding movement, exploration, creativity, and personal development into the regular school week, pupils build essential social, emotional, physical, and cultural foundations. This holistic approach equips pupils with essential life skills, broadens their horizons, builds resilience, and supports them to make meaningful contributions to their school and wider community. Through our holistic enrichment offer, pupils at New Horizons Academy demonstrate: Re-engagement with Education: Increased attendance, enthusiasm, and active participation in daily school life. Enhanced Emotional Resilience: Reduced anxiety, improved self-regulation strategies, and stronger relational skills. Wider Life Competencies: Introduction to and opportunities for practical, creative, and physical skills essential for independent adult life. Active Civic Identity: A clear understanding of community values, empathy, and active citizenship. Nature, Outdoors and AdventureEmotional Regulation & Stress Reduction: Regular immersion in Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) and participation in Wild Meadows, Outdoor Learning Alliance (OLA), and sensory garden sessions provided crucial self-regulation environments that reduce anxiety and support nervous system coregulation. Resilience & Confidence: Outdoor learning challenges foster problem-solving abilities and encourage pupils to step beyond their comfort zones in safe, natural settings. Developing Wider Life and Future Skills Practical Life & Technical Skills: Dedicated Personal Development (PD) clubs including Cooking Club, Science Club, Computing, and Lego Lab build transferable practical skills and technical curiosity. Metacognition & Autonomy: Weekly ‘Reflection Journal’ sessions and our ‘Choosing Time’ system empowers pupils to understand their own learning behaviors, articulate personal choices, and develop independence. Sport and Physical ActivitiesPhysical Health & Positive Energy Outlets: Consistent access to structured sports such as: swimming, football training, boccia, and table tennis promotes physical health and provides structured outlets for energy during the school day. Teamwork & Pride: Representing the academy in sports teams and participating in trust-wide events such as the ‘TOVE Year 6 Trust Olympics’ instills sportspersonship, cooperative play, and school pride. Peer Leadership: Ambassador-led activities develop peer mentoring, communication, and inclusive play across year groups. Civic EngagementActive Citizenship & World Awareness: Weekly sessions of either Votes for Schools or Picture News, and weekly Pol-Ed PSHE sessions deepen pupils' understanding of rights, democracy, safety, and contemporary issues. Empathy & Community Contribution: Direct involvement in community initiatives such as food bank collections for the McCarthy Dixon Foundation, MacMillan coffee mornings, and shelter-building during Refugee Week fosters active empathy, kindness, and social responsibility. Our community space- The Aviary- also provides opportunities for welcoming wider members of our school community. Pupil Voice & Leadership: The School Council and School Ambassadors take on active roles in school governance, highlighting recognition of other pupils through certificates for embodying core values, kindness, and sportsmanship. Arts and CultureCultural Capital & First Experiences: Visits to local theatres (The Deco), participation in International Culture Days, and exploration of local heritage expand pupils' cultural capital and worldviews. Creative Self-Expression: Drama Club, Art Club, whole-school productions, and NHA’s Got Talent offer positive platforms for emotional expression, boosting self-worth and confidence through performance. Literacy & Community Storytelling: Shared library sessions, whole-school Literacy Tree performances, Library Ambassador ‘Book of the Week’ choices and community events like "Tea and a Story" sessions develop strong language skills and foster a school-wide love for reading. Impact of Broadened Horizons: Trips, Visitors & Home CollaborationTransformative "Firsts": Whole-school trips (Woburn Safari Park, Bletchley Park, Planetarium visit, end of year residential) and external visitors (Word Guerrilla, Northampton Saints, PCSOs, Living Eggs, NMPAT music residency) provide crucial first-time life experiences that ignite curiosity and broaden aspirations. Strengthened Home-School Partnerships: Parental support booklets, home curriculum overviews, reading logs, and half-termly projects extend enrichment into the home, deepening family engagement with the child's learning journey. |
